The splendid and elegant opera arts of Suzhou date back a long time ago. Kunqu Opera is regarded as the ancestor of operas and Pingtan Opera is one of the Four National Operas.
Kunqu Opera was proclaimed as a representative of Human Oral and Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO in 2001.
Pingtan Opera and Suju Opera were listed into the first National-level Intangible Cultural Heritage Catalogue by the State Council in 2006.
